In Strasbourg, on the grounds adjacent to the European Parliament’s administrative building, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola unveiled a monument to the Armenian alphabet.
The sculpture, titled “Root Script – The Power of Dialogue,” was installed by Armenia as a sign of gratitude for the European Parliament’s continued and unconditional support. The artwork is composed of letters from the Armenian alphabet.
In her speech, Roberta Metsola emphasized that dialogue is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy, bringing people together and fostering progress, according to the Armenian prime minister’s press service.
“Ultimately, this is the very essence of the European Parliament — building dialogue with one another, with citizens, and with the world around us. And through this beautiful work, this depiction of the Armenian alphabet, the Armenian language strengthens its place in the rich and diverse dialogue called Europe,” Metsola said, quoting Armenian poet Silva Kaputikyan: “Wherever you may be, wherever you go under this moon, do not forget your mother tongue.”
Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that the creation of the Armenian alphabet dates back to the 5th century and represents one of the most important pillars of Armenian identity.
“It is also very symbolic that this sculpture will highlight the important connection between Armenian identity and European identity. I believe that speech, knowledge and text are among the most important and powerful symbols of democracy, because it is impossible to have democracy without text, without communication, without writing, without speeches, without words, without laws,” the prime minister said.
