The Armenian community in Belgium has voiced dissatisfaction with statements made by comedian Vache Tovmasyan, expecting a public clarification and apology regarding the situation.
During his tour performances in the United States, remarks delivered by Tovmasyan targeting the spiritual pastor of the Belgian Armenian community, Reverend Father Zatik Avetikyants, were perceived as offensive and disrespectful, Aysor.am reports.
The Committee of the Armenian Community of Belgium issued a statement condemning the actor’s behavior, emphasizing:
“The Committee of the Armenian Community of Belgium considers it necessary to respond to the situation that has become widely discussed in recent days, related to comedian Vache Tovmasyan.
We recall that during his previous visit to Belgium, the actor received an exceptionally warm and hospitable welcome from our community. His visit was organized with the support of community structures and with the blessing and participation of the local spiritual pastor, Father Zatik. Our community has always been open to cultural initiatives and has shown great willingness to support Armenian artists.
It is with regret and indignation that we learned that during his U.S. tour, one of the comedian’s performances included crude and offensive expressions directed both at the Armenian community of Belgium and at Father Zatik.
The mentioned sketch was not perceived as art or humor, but as a display of disrespect toward those who had once warmly welcomed and supported him.
Given the current situation, we state that there is deep disappointment and justified dissatisfaction within our community. Any public speech or action that may offend the community and spiritual values of the diaspora is unacceptable to us.
Against this backdrop, we have learned that the actor intends to visit Belgium again. The community expects a public clarification and apology regarding the situation. Only in an atmosphere of mutual respect and responsibility will it be possible to restore trust.
The Committee of the Armenian Community of Belgium continues to monitor developments and will act guided by the interests and dignity of the community.”
