
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on Armenia, reaffirming the European Union’s support for the country’s democratic progress, peace efforts, and reforms aimed at European integration.
The document was approved by 476 votes in favor, 47 against, and 48 abstentions, Armenpress reports.
The resolution supports the holding of free, fair, and peaceful parliamentary elections in Armenia in June 2026, stressing that their outcome must reflect solely the will of the Armenian people. It highlights the importance of independent electoral processes, equal campaigning conditions, media pluralism, and full protection of fundamental rights. At the same time, it underlines the need to combat disinformation, illegal financing, and vote-buying.
The document also welcomes the deepening of EU-Armenia relations and Armenia’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and reforms. It positively assesses the new EU-Armenia strategic agenda, progress in implementing the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, dialogue on visa liberalization, and the implementation of the “Resilience and Growth” plan.
The resolution places special emphasis on the upcoming European Political Community and EU-Armenia summits scheduled to take place in Yerevan in May 2026, viewing them as an important political signal of solidarity with Armenia.
Addressing regional security, the document supports the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and calls for a comprehensive agreement based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The resolution condemns the detention of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan and demands their immediate release.
The European Parliament also calls for expanding EU financial and technical assistance to Armenia, particularly in the fields of energy, digital development, and economic resilience. It positively evaluates the activities of the EU monitoring mission and the expansion of cooperation with civil society.
In addition, the importance of normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations is emphasized, particularly in terms of opening borders and ensuring regional stability.
The document strongly condemns foreign information manipulation and interference attempts, specifically highlighting the activities of Russia and its influence networks, including cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns.
Overall, the resolution underscores the importance of Armenia’s democratic choice, sovereign development, strengthening of its European trajectory, and resilience against external threats.
Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
