Samvel Karapetyan, leader of the Strong Armenia party, said that if his political force wins the June 7 elections, the government’s first meeting will adopt what he called the country’s main law — the “Safarov Prevention Law.”
“If we fail to stop the entry into Armenia of the 300,000 Azerbaijanis planned by Pashinyan and Aliyev, then all our economic programs will become impossible to implement, because the main jobs will go to Azerbaijanis. Therefore, at the very first meeting of our government we will adopt the country’s main law, which we have called the ‘Safarov Prevention Law,’ to prohibit Azerbaijanis from buying our land, our homes or receiving our land as gifts,” Karapetyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.
Party member and lawyer Aram Vardevanyan added that the initiative would also be presented as a hate-prevention package.
“We propose that no individual or legal entity holding Azerbaijani citizenship, acting as a beneficial owner conducting activities in Armenia, should be able to acquire any real estate in our country,” he stressed.
Another party representative, constitutional law expert Gohar Meloyan, said Armenia currently faces serious security challenges because, in her assessment, despite government statements about peace, issues related to violations of territorial integrity remain unresolved.
“There is an Azerbaijani armed presence in four regions of Armenia, and Azerbaijani forces have not only not withdrawn from those territories, but the issue of enclaves also remains unresolved,” Meloyan said.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously responded to Samvel Karapetyan’s statements during a recent press conference, assuring that under his government Armenia would not settle 300,000 Azerbaijanis in the country.
On December 18, 2024, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that around 300,000 Azerbaijanis who left Armenia at the end of the previous century were awaiting Yerevan’s response regarding conditions for return and reintegration.
