NSS calls Karapetyan FSB-related record state secret

Armenia’s National Security Service of Armenia said information regarding a reference to Russia’s Federal Security Service in the passport records of Samvel Karapetyan constitutes a state secret, according to Factor.am.

The NSS declined to provide further clarification.

“The NSS carries out its functions within the framework of powers granted by law, ensuring the security of the individual, society and the state. Information concerning the activities of national security bodies and their results is classified as a state secret under the expanded departmental list of information subject to classification within the National Security Service, carries the appropriate confidentiality markings and … cannot be provided,” the agency said in response to an inquiry.

According to a document published by Russian outlet The Insider, the employment section of the Russian Interior Ministry passport file for Strong Armenia alliance leader Samvel Karapetyan contained the entry “FSB Information Center.”

A member of Russia’s Interior Ministry told The Insider that the notation means authorities must first contact that structure when checking the citizen in question. According to the same source, such markings are usually used for foreigners operating under the structure’s supervision or for non-public informants.

The election campaign that began on May 8 will continue until June 5. June 6 will be a day of silence, and voting will take place on June 7.
