Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union will discuss issues related to Armenia during the May 29 summit, including the country’s future participation in the EAEU, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.
“Tomorrow, the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council will take place. I believe this issue will be discussed in one form or another,” Ushakov told reporters when asked about the consensus between Russia and Kazakhstan regarding Armenia’s role in the union, according to RIA Novosti.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a state visit to Kazakhstan from May 27 to 29. He is also expected to participate in events organized as part of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in Astana.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously stated that it would be appropriate for Armenia to clarify its position regarding potential membership in the European Union. According to Putin, Armenia’s plans related to EU accession “require special discussion.”
“For example, a referendum could be held. It is not our business, but in principle, it would be logical to ask Armenian citizens what choice they want to make. Based on that, we would draw conclusions and move toward a soft, civilized and mutually beneficial ‘divorce.’ After all, we are now witnessing everything that happened in the Ukrainian direction. And how did it all begin? It started with Ukraine’s attempt to join the European Union,” Putin said.
