Armenia launches ChatGPT Edu education initiative

Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI, and Firebird have signed a memorandum of cooperation under which OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu tool will become available to Armenia’s educational, engineering and research communities.

The first phase of the initiative will provide access to artificial intelligence tools for 50,000 students, teachers and researchers across Armenia through the efforts of Firebird and the ministry.

ChatGPT Edu is a version of ChatGPT designed for educational institutions. It enables schools and universities to use advanced AI solutions, including capabilities similar to Codex, while maintaining high standards of data protection, information security and governance. In higher education, the platform will be available to both lecturers and students, while in the general education system it will be accessible to all teachers and high school students.

Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan noted that in recent years Armenia has consistently expanded initiatives aimed at applying artificial intelligence in education and promoting AI literacy.

“Artificial intelligence is already part of our reality, and education systems around the world are facing the challenge of engaging effectively with this new reality. This initiative is precisely about that,” Zhanna Andreasyan said.

The minister also announced that during the launch phase, in the 2026–2027 academic year, access to ChatGPT Edu will be funded by Firebird.

According to Firebird co-founder Alexander Yesayan, investments in education are the most important investments in the age of artificial intelligence.

Joining the meeting via video link, OpenAI Education for Countries initiative lead Jaina Devani welcomed participants and stressed that education is one of the most important fields through which artificial intelligence can expand human potential.

“Through our collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia and Firebird, we are helping make ChatGPT Edu available to the country’s students, educators and researchers, providing access to advanced AI tools that can be used safely, creatively and effectively. Armenia has strong human capital and a developing digital infrastructure, and this initiative can contribute to shaping the next generation of innovators equipped with AI literacy,” Jaina Devani said.

The parties emphasized that the introduction of ChatGPT Edu is intended to significantly improve the quality of artificial intelligence education.

At the same time, they stressed that adherence to ethical principles and the responsible use of data are of particular importance to the initiative’s success. To that end, special attention will be given to developing digital literacy, fostering a culture of proper AI tool usage, and strengthening digital security within educational environments.

During the initial phase of the initiative, in the 2026–2027 academic year, access to ChatGPT Edu will be financed by Firebird. Following an assessment of the program’s effectiveness and its impact on educational outcomes, the possibility of state funding will be considered, with the aim of integrating the system into the national education framework as a sustainable and scalable component.
