Defense Ministry: military police act within legal authority

Armenia’s Ministry of Defense has clarified that the Military Police carry out service at border checkpoints within the scope of the powers granted to them by law.

“The Military Police of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, acting within the authority assigned by the Law on Military Police and in order to ensure the fulfillment of its mandated tasks, including at Armenia’s border checkpoints, performs service with the aim of assisting military commissariats in the processes of registering citizens liable for military service, conscripting them for mandatory military service, and involving them in reserve training activities,” the statement said.

Defense Minister Suren Papikyan, speaking with journalists, did not rule out the possibility that Armenian citizens liable for military service who arrive in Armenia from abroad could receive notices requiring participation in 25-day military training camps.

Earlier, media reports claimed that the Military Police had handed notices to certain Armenian citizens arriving from Russia at border checkpoints, requiring them to take part in 25-day training exercises.
