Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Armenian authorities committed serious procedural violations during the parliamentary elections, according to RIA Novosti.
“The entire election campaign and voting process took place under conditions of harsh pressure on opposition parties and movements, as well as their activists and supporters. The Armenian Apostolic Church, which traditionally enjoys deep respect in the country, also came under the ‘wheel’ of these persecutions. All of this constitutes a gross violation by Yerevan of democratic principles and procedures for conducting free elections,” Zakharova was quoted as saying on the ministry’s official website.
According to her, the elections demonstrated that support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has declined significantly.
“As for Moscow’s future approach in relations with Armenia, we intend to build our policy taking into account the actual steps of Armenia’s leadership,” she said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also stated that the parliamentary elections held in Armenia demonstrated a high degree of polarization within Armenian society.
“The parliamentary elections held in Armenia have shown that Armenian society is deeply polarized,” the ministry said.
According to preliminary results from the June 7 National Assembly elections, the vote distribution was as follows: Civil Contract — 49.825%, Strong Armenia — 23.281%, Armenia Alliance — 9.934%, and Prosperous Armenia — 3.996%. Under these updated figures, the Prosperous Armenia Party does not clear the 4% electoral threshold required for parliamentary representation.
