Strong Armenia to decide on mandates after CC ruling

Aram Vardevanyan, representing the Strong Armenia alliance, said the bloc will address the issue of whether to take its National Assembly mandates only after the Constitutional Court announces its ruling.

"We will discuss whether or not to take the mandates only after the Constitutional Court's decision," Vardevanyan said, according to Panorama.am.

Speaking to reporters, Vardevanyan said that during meetings with the alliance's representatives, citizens expressed concerns not only about developments surrounding the elections but also about Armenia's future and the risks facing the country.

"Citizens have many concerns, as do many of us, about the direction Armenia is taking and the risks our homeland is facing even at this moment," he said.

According to Vardevanyan, it is important that citizens do not become discouraged or lose hope.

He also stated that the Strong Armenia alliance had faced obstacles that significantly affected the election outcome, Sputnik Armenia reported.

Responding to a question from Constitutional Court Vice President and rapporteur Edgar Shatiryan on whether the recent parliamentary election campaign had been driven mainly by inter-party, ideological and policy-based competition or by personal rivalries, Vardevanyan said his alliance had conducted its campaign on the basis of its political programme.

"We highlighted the person assuming political responsibility — Samvel Karapetyan — which I cannot say about the Civil Contract party. It was Civil Contract that engaged in hate speech. We have legal and factual evidence of this, and when such rhetoric is used by the head of the executive branch while holding the levers of state power, its impact is incomparable to similar language or departures from policy platforms by any other political force," he said.

According to Vardevanyan, this also failed to comply with the requirements of Article 7 of the Constitution, which guarantees equal conditions for elections.

Speaking about the obstacles faced by the alliance, Vardevanyan pointed to the house arrest imposed on alliance leader Samvel Karapetyan, as well as criminal proceedings launched against alliance members and supporters, accompanied by motions seeking pre-trial detention as a preventive measure.

Armenia held parliamentary elections on June 7, with 16 parties and two alliances taking part. According to the Central Election Commission's final results, the Civil Contract party won 64 seats, the Strong Armenia alliance secured 29 seats, and the Hayastan Alliance received 12 seats.

On June 26, the Constitutional Court began hearings on the consolidated case based on petitions filed by seven political forces challenging the results of the June 7 parliamentary elections. The proceedings are ongoing.
