U.S. deports Armenian citizen to CAR

U.S. authorities deported an Armenian citizen (or citizens) to the Central African Republic in the first half of June, but Armenia's Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to an inquiry about the case, according to Sputnik Armenia.

The U.S. Department of State, meanwhile, advises U.S. citizens against traveling to the Central African Republic because of "civil unrest, crime, kidnapping, and terrorism."

The case concerns the deportation of about 20 third-country nationals by U.S. authorities to the Central African Republic. Court rulings prevented them from being returned to their countries of origin, after which U.S. authorities found a way to circumvent those restrictions by sending them to a third country.

The Associated Press (AP) first reported that an Armenian citizen (or citizens) was among those deported, citing Ali Rahnama, executive director of the Iranian American Legal Defense Fund (IALDF).

Later, an unnamed U.S. official confirmed the information in comments to CBS News. According to the official, the deportees also included migrants from Armenia and Iraq.

The Human Rights Watch organization also confirmed that an Armenian citizen (or citizens) was among those deported.

The flight carrying the deportees to Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, made a stop in Ghana before reaching its destination.

In May 2026, the United States also operated a deportation flight carrying individuals returned to Armenia. In 2025, two flights transporting deportees from the United States arrived in Armenia.
