Opposition MP signals rallies, street protests

Several opposition parties will hold rallies and launch street protests as they unite around a common political agenda, Hayastan faction MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan said.

Speaking outside the Court of General Jurisdiction of the Avan and Nor Nork administrative districts, where a hearing was underway on a request to place Prosperous Armenia leader Gagik Tsarukyan in pretrial detention, Saghatelyan commented on a joint statement recently issued by several opposition parties, according to Sputnik Armenia.

"These agenda items must be fully presented and developed, and a roadmap should be formed around them. Naturally, there will be rallies and there will be street protests. The question is when they will take place, what their structure will be and which forces will participate," Saghatelyan said.

He also argued that people with what he described as a national outlook would face persecution in Armenia because, in his view, they do not serve a Turkish-Azerbaijani agenda. According to the opposition lawmaker, even businesspeople who are not involved in politics but refuse to accept what he described as a process of "Turkification" would also face persecution.

On the morning of July 6, masked special forces officers entered Tsarukyan's residence. Investigative actions were later carried out at other properties linked to Tsarukyan, as well as at the homes of directors of companies belonging to the Multi Group holding. Tsarukyan was detained later that evening. He and another individual have been charged with aiding fraud and aiding money laundering.
