YEREVAN CALLS ARMENIA'S ELECTION TO THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION "SIGNIFICANT DIPLOMATIC VICTORY"
YEREVAN, May 4. /Mediamax/. "Armenia's election as a member in the UN Human Rights Commission represents a significant diplomatic victory", the press release of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia, which Mediamax received today, says.
"Armenia's membership in the Human Rights Commission is evidence of the experience that it has accumulated over the last decade within the UN and in the field of human rights, and is a manifestation of its willingness to take on even greater responsibilities in that arena", the press release reads.
Armenia received 30 votes at the 3 May 2001 meeting in New York, during which the UN's Economic and Social Council elected 14 new members to three-year terms on the UN Human Rights Commission.
Armenia and Croatia became the new members of the UN Human Rights Commission from the Eastern European Group.
Latvia and Azerbaijan, the other two contenders for those two seats, received only 24 and 14 votes respectively. A simple majority of the Economic and Social Council's 54 members is required to win. --0--
