It’s not late yet to recognize the Sumgait massacre of Armenians as genocide, according to Heritage party secretary.
“The authorities should take up the issue, which can become a part of Armenia’s state policy,” Larisa Alaverdyan told journalists in Yerevan.
“The Sumgait case is the only one which contains testimony of Azerbaijanis, what is an advantage,” she noted
Alaverdyan emphasized that Armenians never constituted a national minority in Sumgait, the town they had built.
Witnesses of the pogroms, who lost their relatives in those tragic days, were also present at the news conference. “Azerbaijanis were shouting that all Armenians must be killed,” Raya Tovmasyan recollected. “My husband was fighting with the Azerbaijani assaulters and was killed in the end.”
