Upon completion of the meeting with EC President Herman Van Rompuy in Brussels, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said that recent statements by heads of states of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries were encouraging.
As Azerbaijan President noted, the leaders specifically stressed the unacceptability of status quo, as well as the fact that the conflict must be solved on the basis of Helsinki Final Act, combining the principles of territorial integrity and people’s right for self-determination, which, as Aliyev noted, are not mutually exclusive.
Dwelling on June 24 meeting in Kazan, Aliyev noted that Azerbaijani side expects Armenia to demonstrate constructive approach, stressing that Azerbaijan wished the conflict to be settled as soon as possible.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs came out with a statement with regard to Kazan meeting of Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian Presidents.
“The meeting between President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev with participation of President of Russia Dmitri Medvedev is designed to serve as a landmark in Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement. We expect Baku and Yerevan to react constructively on the joint statement made on May 26 in Deauville by the Presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries, which contains a call upon the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to demonstrate political will and finalize the basic principles (of a peace agreement) during the forthcoming summit in June,” the statement of the RF Foreign Ministry runs.
