A consortium will be created to build a new pipeline that will carry natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz II project through Turkey, the deputy head of Azerbaijan's state energy company Socar, Elshad Nasirov, said Wednesday, Nov 2.
The consortium members will be picked by Azerbaijan's government as well as the companies participating in the development of the Shah Deniz field, Nasirov said. In addition, the Turkish government will nominate one participant, he said.
The pipeline will have a capacity of no less than 16 billion cubic meters a year, with 10 billion cubic meters destined for Europe and 6 billion cubic meters for Turkey's western regions, Nasirov said.
He didn't mention the possible cost of the pipeline.
The BP PLC (BP)-led Shah Deniz II projects expects to begin supplying 10 billion cubic meters of gas a year to Europe by 2017.
Four pipeline projects--Nabucco, Interconnector Turkey-Greece-Italy, Trans Adriatic Pipeline and a BP-led proposal--are competing for the right to ship gas from Azerbaijan to Europe, Fox Business reported.
