Expert: Armenian opposition doesn’t believe in power change through elections

Edgar Vardanyan, a political expert at the Armenian Center for National and International studies, supposes that the Armenian opposition doesn’t believe in the possibility of power change through elections.

“The proposal to amend the Election Code aims to weaken the country’s rulers,” he told a press conference on Jan 23.

Vardanyan also noted that the majority election system is one of the most effective ways for the current regime to maintain power.

At the same time, he underlined that although he doesn’t rule out changes in the Election Code before parliamentary elections in May and transition to completely proportional system of elections, he doesn’t believe it’s possible.

According to him, the process of consolidating resources around President Serzh Sargsyan and decreasing the number of oligarchs in ruling circles is underway.

Armenia’s National Assembly consists of 131 deputies, 41 of which are elected by majority and 90 by proportional system.

Opposition Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun parties offered on December 27 to transfer to proportional electoral system. The Armenian National Congress said it plans rallies on the days when the issue will be discussed in parliament.
