Government officials say that Poland does not intend to adopt the European currency in 2015 but should meet the main financial criteria for admission that year.

Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski said in Brussels that Poland has "no intention to enter (the eurozone) in 2015 but we definitely want to meet the fiscal criteria then."

Rostowski said that in 2015 Poland's deficit should be brought down to under 1 percent of GDP, from 5.6 percent in 2011. That would mean meeting the most demanding criteria for conversion of the local currency, the zloty, to the euro.

Rostowski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke at a news conference following the European Union summit.

Tusk said that a conversion in 2015 would not be realistic, The Associated Press reported.
