40 Days: From Opposition to Power
Then member of parliament from Yelk bloc, current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was in Gyumri on March 31 where he declared live on Facebook that he is launching a 14-day campaign dubbed “My step”, seeking to prevent former PM Serzh Sargsyan’s third term at the helm of the country. Reaching Yerevan, Pashinyan gathered tens of thousands of supporters around himself and declared a “velvet revolution” which resulted in Sargsyan’s resignation. Moreover, days later Pashinyan himself was voted in as Armenia’s 16th premier despite the parliament’s failure to elect him on the first try. This process lasted 40 days overall with PAN Photo capturing every single moment of what was happening. Given that the entire world was closely following the developments in Armenia, our photos were featured in publications by The New York Times, Le Monde, The Washington Post, Al Jazeera, Esquire and a number of other prestigious news outlets. Those days are history now, so we suggest you go through the 40 days of the “velvet revolution” in photos.
