U.S. still believes “peace is possible” between Armenia, Azerbaijan

The United States continues to believe that peace is possible between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Vedant Patel told a briefing on Monday, May 13. “When it comes to the Nagorno-Karabakh region, we continue to believe that peace is possible,” Patel said when asked about the recent meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister in Almaty. “It’s something that the Secretary and others continue to remain deeply engaged on. I don’t have any updates on the negotiations between the parties, but we will continue to support this process.” On May 10-11, direct negotiations between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov, took place in Almaty.
