Karabakh conflict carries potential for escalation, OSCE chief says![]() June 29, 2016 - 14:27 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The Nagorno Karabakh conflict carries a potential for further escalation, OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Germen Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Wednesday, June 29, according to Tert.am. Steinmeier is due to arrive in Armenia Wednesday to tackle the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. “As the OSCE chairing country in 2016, Germany has the responsibility to ward off such a prospect as much as possible through ceasefire, confidence-building measures and a quick renewal of negotiations,” the top German diplomat said. The same is true about territorial conflicts in Georgia, Steinmeier added. Related links: ![]() ![]() The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now. ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire.
